I see people deeply immersed in portals both visual and sonic, at often times simultaneously. The bright screen has evolved into an extension of the enclosed brain: a self-filling calendar, a social crutch, a network of confidence, a solipsistic third eye, and more obviously, the key to an optical dismissal of one’s immediate surroundings. The headphones over the ears are an equally telling escape-habit in a world often described as noise-polluted – a world that has grown to be more repellant than appealing to our senses, a saturated soundscape gradually evading our limited attentiveness. These compositions explore the expectations we have surrounding organized, controlled listening experiences; I understand these popularized structures (songs, albums, playlists, mixes, etc.) as being simulations - virtual realities of programmed auditory events. I use these pieces to examine resolution’s (or, perhaps, fidelity’s) role as the 4th wall of a soundscape, as a control of the immersive capacity of a digitally projected (and then aurally constructed) space, effecting the suggestibility of its listener and the suspended disbelief which the listening portal commands.
